  • Day two - Race Two - Where did my legs go?

    1:34:56
    44 overall 3 clydesdale

    Sprint
    750m swim - 17? mile bike - 5k run

Day two found me shaking the tequila fog from my brain and slowly getting ready for day two. Everything was shaping up to be another perfect day when I heard the water temperature was 76 degrees and wetsuits were legal. Damn! Mine was at home. Someone offered me theirs and I almost took it but figured it wouldn't help that much.

    Swim: 16:07 11/25

Yeah. Should have borrowed the suit. Oh well!

    Bike: 52:12

So I gained time on the bike but rode signicantly slower than the day before. I really just didn't have the legs. Normally they get tired going up the hills but they feel strong as soon as I'm done with the hill. Today they were tired even going downhill. Either way I was happy I chose to do this race because a second day riding on the course was worth it. Again this course was awesome.

    Run: 23:22

I saw a big C on the leg of a guy in front of me and I did everything I could to catch him but I just didn't have it. He ended up beating me by like 20 seconds. The first place guy was just under a minute ahead of me. Stupid Wetsuit. Live and learn. Always come prepared. It's much easier to bring my wetsuit and not need it.

Overall I'd say the best part of this race weekend aside from the fantastic course was the chance to chat with so many people on the course. On Saturday I felt like I knew every third person I ran by. There were more people there than any Saturday rats ride. I met a ton of new people as well. Friends of friends and work friends. Too many to count. What a great time. Now I just hope we have as many out at Savageman.

For those of you that were racing elsewhere can't wait to hear about your adventure. For those of you I raced with at Luray I'm looking forward to your take on all the events of the weekend.

  • Luray International Triathlon

    62 overall 2 clydesdale
    2:39:38

    1500m swim 26(and change)mile bike 10k run

I feel I races fairly well at this distance but it is definately not a great race distance for me since I swim like drowning rhino, just flailing about trying not to drown. It is going to be a focus this winter.

The weather was perfect, the course was spectacular and David and Greg at Setup-events had an amazing race for us. I will be back next year for sure.

    The swim: 31:40

The water was 80 degrees the morning of the race so no wetsuits allowed. I actually figured there was no way it would be cold enough so I left mine at home. That came back to haunt me on Sunday but that's different RR. I managed to navigate my way through the swim course but barely. At one point I was in such a calm zone that I didn't look up for quite some time and when I finally did there was no one near me; not cause I was ahead of them but becuase I was about 50 feet off course. I made it back into the pack and finished feeling pretty good.

    The Bike: 1:17:44

This was a pretty tough course and I'm not good on hills so I struggled quite a bit but it was such a great ride, the road, the scenery, the sharp turns, fast descents, and the steep climbs, and the false flats made for one of my favorite bike courses. I don't know that I could have gone much faster even if I didn't have a run to do.

    The Run: 47:03

A double out and back allowed you to see your competion as you ran. I saw Jon, who destroyed me, and based on my watch I figured he was about 8 minutes in front of me. I was pretty sure that I am a faster runner than him but not but much so I realized at this point I wasn't going to catch him but I told myself to give it all I had to shave off a little time. I didn't gain much and in the end he beat me by over 8 minutes. Oh well.

Overall, as I mentioned, this race was spectacular and I can't wait for next year!

  • No More Meat!?!

So I've done a lot of crazy things in my life. Sometimes, no most times I'm surprised that I'm still alive and employed. This time though I've stepped off the edge. I've given up meat for the next 3 months. Why? Why? Why? Well when riding across Iowa there were, as I've mentioned numerous times, Pig farms everywhere. The stench was enough to make me nearly vomit. Plus I only actually saw one farm where the pigs were outside. So I told myself when I got home I'd give up meat for a bit as both a mini protest and vehicle to encourage more vegetarion meals into my life.I'm not going to join PETA. I'm not going to tell a single person they should do this. I'm not here to codemn the meat industry. We all have our issues that we feel strongly about and I don't like when I hear people pass off their opinions as the word of God even if it is allegedly The Word of God. So basically no meat until the First of the year with the exception of Turkey at thanksgiving which includes leftovers. Thanksgiving is my favorite of all holidays and I'm not going to let a little pig shit ruin it. I did not give up fish so there will be plenty of Sushi in my future. So far it has been almost two weeks and no problems. I'll keep you posted. I am also looking for suggestions on what my next endeavor should be. I finsihed the training ride and now I'm trying to decide what else I should VIRTUALLY do. Swim around the world? Bike across Canada? Run to Mexico? Drop a comment and let me know. Finally Thank you to those who have donated to the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation in my name recently (LeMold and Deadpan) As well as all of you that did so in the past. It's really helped out a lot. I have two races this weekend so next week we'll have a couple reports.Hope everyone is doing GREAT!- shawn

  • Culpepper Sprint Race Report

    me

    Results:
    Overall - 58/529
    Males - 52/324
    Clydesdales: 1/29

This race was a late addition to my calendar. Julie, my wife, had signed up for and had been training for the SheRoxx women's tri in Philadelphia. (man I love women only tris) Unfortunately during training she ended up with a stress fracture in her foot making it impossible for her to compete. We talked and she said I should sign up for Culpepper since it wasn't full yet, so I did.

We went down the night before to stay at our friends’ home. We could have easily driven down in the morning but it's nice to visit with friends when the opportunity presents itself. The night was definitely NOT a pre race evening but it was fun and we got a few extra minutes of sleep in the morning.

    Anyway the race

Swim: 15:28 6/29 (maybe my worst ever)

I lined up with the big boys in the water and realized too late that I was in trouble starting this far in the back. I never did get into a swimming rhythm because every time I started to I ran into someone and to make matters worse the water was so warm it felt like I was swimming in a dirty bathtub. In short it was a horrible, horrible swim. I will make sure to start farther up in the pack from now on.

Bike: 45:32 2/29 (not bad but should be faster)

I had a hard time getting going on the bike. My legs felt like lead. I'm not sure what it was but thankfully after a few miles I was riding pretty well. 1 guy passed me but didn't get too far ahead by the end so I was pretty happy with my ride. I have been doing a lot of slow, social riding lately and it definitely showed as I didn't seem to have the speed I expected. I'm fine with that though since each of my social rides has paid dividends else where in life. You know when not in triathlon...

    Run: 22:40 1/29

This was the best run I've had in a race to date. I felt good the whole time and more importantly I felt almost fast too. I hope I can sustain the pace for distance. We'll find out in September at the Patriot's half.

Overall: I had a great time the swim aside and as always Greg from Setupevents had a great race. If the calendar allows I may find myself in the lineup for next year as well.

About Me

  • Born and Raised in North Dakota I didn't see a lot of the world. Since leaving I have done my best to see as much as possible. I want to share my experiences and pictures with anyone else who wants to see the world themselves or is more comfortable seeing it vicariously. I am interested in anything new that makes me re-evaluate myself and my surroundings as well as people who do the same...shawn
